These words are hardly a charming invitation to the Christian life. Jesus talks about profit and loss, danger and sacrifice, fear and obedience, conflicting loyalties, and living a God-with-us life, not merely making a living. Jesus invites us to share his life. There will be losses and pain and conflict, but true life with be gained.
